For Week Two of Mixtape Mondays (yes I know it’s Tuesday, but yesterday was a holiday) I have made a short playlist of “Ten Songs I Will Listen to For the Rest of My Life.”
Every time I hear one of my favorite songs and am reminded again of why it is so good and why I love it, I just want to tell someone.
*Disclaimer! I don’t consider myself a music journalist! I am a music lover and I love creating playlists and sharing them with people! My words and descriptions of these songs might not be the most eloquent or critical, I just want to tell you why I love them and sometimes I might not have much of a reason!*

If you didn’t get a chance to listen to Week One of Mixtape Mondays, you can do so here.

Here we go with “Ten Songs I Will Listen to for the Rest of my Life”:
Take a listen to the playlist on 8tracks.com.

1. Simple Minds – Don’t You Forget About Me
My combined love for 80’s new wave and John Hughes movies puts this song at the top of my list.
I like that the song was written for the Breakfast Club and Simple Minds were asked to record it for the movie.
Though it is now their most recognized song, they were originally reluctant to play it.
What I love most about the song is the drums, the keyboard and Jim Kerr’s voice, however it is those parts that often get lost in covers of the song. (Don’t get me wrong, I am usually a big fan of covers, but people seem to get this one wrong).

2. First Aid Kit – Emmylou
This is another song I belt in my car, but every time I choke up. The song and their voices are so beautiful, I don’t know how anyone could NOT be moved by this song. These sisters have such incredible talent. I am contanstanly in awe of what they do and have accomplished. They’ve become international stars through Youtube, they’ve made Patti Smith cry, and last fall they opened for Rodriguez at Radio City Music Hall in New York. And they’re younger than me!

3. Stevie Nicks – Edge of Seventeen
Another song that I associate with a movie – School of Rock. This is a song that I am belting every time I hear it.
I love the harmonies, the harsh side of Stevie’s voice and just how epic the song is.
It will never get old for me.

4. Moby – Porcelain
A piece of genius is this song. It is a perfect piece of road trip music or movie soundtrack gold. It’s a song you can get lost in and I will never stop loving it.

5. Radiohead – 15 Step
A great song that I like to tap my foot to in 5/4 time.

6. Arcade Fire – Wake Up
Wake Up has been one of my favorite songs for a very long time. Probably since the first time I heard them play it with David Bowie, which is one of those memories that I am pretty sure was real, but I’m not 100% sure anymore since I swear I heard it on C95 (Saskatoon’s pop music station) way back when they only had a video for Rebellion which was sometimes played on Much Music.

7. U2 – With Or Without You
I don’t care that everyone else I talk to hates U2. I really love them, mostly the album All That You Can’t Leave Behind and this song. Similar to Emmylou, it’s a song that will choke me up based solely on how beautiful it is.
My favorite parts of the song, the Edge’s disdained guitar and Bono’s “Oh-oh-oh-oh” belting.

8. Portishead – Roads
Mmmmmm…

9. Talking Heads – This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)
No Talking Heads fan can deny the greatness of this song.

10. Sigur Rós – Svefn-g-englar
This song has a lot of feelings for me. I picture my parents house and wrapping Christmas presents in their living room. I remember being ten years old and innocent and worry-free. I think of Sigur Rós’ documentary Heima, which is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. I doubt there is anything in the world more perfect than this song (though I have not had any children yet..).

Thanks for checking out Week Two of Mixtape Mondays!
Come back in a couple weeks for the next edition.
I’d love to hear what you are listening to this week, so give me a comment below!
